Do You Know When it’s Time to Sell?

Using Point and Figure Charts is one of the best ways to avoid losers in the stock market. A Point and Figure Chart is a filtered view of a security. It measures only price movement. It is constructed of alternating columns of Xs and Os, where Xs represent an increase in price and Os represent a decrease in price. The two never appear in the same column.

When an “O” column exceeds a previous “O” column on the downside, that’s a sell signal. Concentrating on getting rid of securities giving a Point and Figure Sell Signal is one of the best ways to avoid losers in the stock market.

Run Your Portfolio Like a Business.

Your portfolio is like a business, and its mission it to get you to and through retirement. The securities in your portfolio are like employees. If they don’t show up for work every day, you need to fire them. The easiest way to understand this is through Relative Strength Analysis.

Relative Strength takes the world of securities and divides them into above average performers and below average performers. Your goal, for your “business,” should be to fill your portfolio with the above average performers with positive Relative Strength. Those are the employees that are showing up for work every day.

It's about time you start practicing financial self-defense.

Practice Financial Self-Defense.

What is good financial self-defense? Knowing when it’s time to sell! An effective way of knowing is by looking at the Major Trend Line of a Point and Figure Chart. The grid-like nature of a Point and Figure Chart allows you to draw a 45° trend line. To stay above the trend line, you need to be getting 1 unit of reward for every unit of risk you take. As long as you are above the trend line, you’re getting paid to take the risk.

However, once a security begins to trade below the trend line, you’re not getting paid to take the risk. Therefore, it’s time to sell!

You Have No Friends On Wall Street.

Nobody on Wall Street is going to call you at the top. Therefore, you need to know when it’s time to sell! One of the best ways to know is through Relative Strength Analysis. This takes the world of securities and divides them into above and below average performers on a bell-shaped curve.

Relative Strength Analysis tells you two important things: 1. What side of the curve am I on? And 2. What if I cross from one side to the other? When you cross from the above average side to the below average side, then it’s time to sell!
